What to expect from the 2018 Grammys Ceremony?
Such a scenario would be a new snub for this dominant genre of the
music industry today: hip-hop won only twice the album of the year, in
1999 with Lauryn Hill and 2004 with Outkast. In 2017, when everyone announced the triumph of "Lemonade" Beyoncé, it
was finally the British Adele who had been crowned with his album "25".Many
critics had denounced a lack of openness of the Grammys, even latent
racism, already illustrated by the success of Taylor Swift in front of
Kendrick Lamar in 2016, Beck in front of Beyoncé in 2015, or Taylor
Swift against Beyoncé already in 2010 .The results of the vote, involving 13,000 music professionals, may,
however, be influenced by the very late introduction of electronic
voting, which may give more importance to the younger generation. If the advent of hip-hop is not certain, one thing is certain: it will not be supplanted this year by rock. The latter is totally absent from the four major categories, where are
represented hip-hop, funk, R & B, indie pop or reggaeton, with the
megahit "Despacito", favorite in the Disc category of the year.Exceptionally, the Grammy Awards make a detour to New York and Madison
Square Garden, for the first time since 2003, before returning next
year to Los Angeles.Unlike many awards ceremonies, the Grammys give a very important place
to the stage performances, which stretch the television broadcast over
almost four hours.Nearly twenty musical numbers are expected, including Kendrick Lamar,
Elton John - who just announced a last monster tour -, Rihanna, Bruno
Mars and Cardi B, the rapper sensation of the year totally shunned for
the main categories. The victories of dozens of female artists in major categories might
suggest that the subject of women's representation in the music industry
was less prominent than in Hollywood. But a study published Thursday by the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, a
project carried by the University of Southern California (USC), showed
that out of 600 pieces examined, only 16.8% were registered by women in
2017.The imbalance is even more marked among the authors, with 88.6% of men. In production, the ratio between men and women is 49 to 1.As for the issue of sexual harassment, the music world has so far
lagged far behind the film industry, whose functioning is deeply
questioned by the Weinstein affair.Except for hip-hop producer Russell Simmons, who was charged with rape
this week after being charged with sexual assault by several women,
charges against prominent musical figures have been rare.At
the beginning of the week, the music world awoke with a start and a
group of musicians proposed to wear a white rose to the Grammys as a
sign of solidarity, which should be very followed.
